Intellectuals Today?
Having glanced through Richard Posner's book on public intellectuals, I've started to wonder about a less complex topic: what makes an intellectual? Back in the mid twentieth century I suppose it was being up on Freud, knowing about relativity, reading novelists like John Updike, being able to pass muster on Kuhn and so on. But what is it now? Surely, Freud is out, despite some excellent attempts at revival. Likewise, John Updike is a bit dated, and Kuhn is really over. So what does one need to know about to be an intellectual? Maybe, I just don't know because I'm not one. I'd like to think one has to at least have a passing familiarity with possible worlds semantics, but apparently outside of philosophy circles, this is not so widespread. So, what are the hot current theories and books one needs to know to pass muster as an intellectual? Zane suggests Foucault, but clearly continental philosophy is dead too. Indeed apparently even in France analytic philosophy is gaining a serious foothold. So, I'm starting to think that the age when there were a few hot sociological/philosophical theories that everybody needed to know about is over. But maybe this is a good thing. Maybe as Scott Soames suggests in his history of twentieth century philosophy, the age of specialization has taken over, and big general theories just aren't so important any more...

It is not just philosophers who need to know possible worlds semantics. Modal logic has been described as the natural language of computer science, and most theoretical computer scientists and many applied computer scientists would now know it in one dialect or another, and thus have an understanding possible worlds semantics. I work in an academic CS department half of whom are epistemic, temporal, deontic or game logicians, some of whom are collaborating with like people at companies such as Motorola and NASA.
If you build a space rocket you want to make sure it will not fail, preferably by proving that the system will not enter a fail state. Temporal and other modal logic has proven useful in describing system properties in such a way that failure-free-ness (for example) can be proven.
Fair paint, thanks. Of course, many linguists are also familiar with possible world-semantics. I still think it's fair to say that possible world semantics have yet to be part of general intellectual culture. And I'm not sure this is such a good thing either. I've noticed many people (including some philosophes) are extremely bad at evaluating the truth of counterfactuals. Even worse are confusions about different forms of necessity (epistemic versus modal verus deontic). It strikes me that these are life-tool important beyond comp sci, linguistics, and philosophy,

What's funny these days is that most of the novels you have to read to feel adequately intellecual seem to be about the death of intellectualism, in one form or another. And not all of them are against it!

And Nat, I forgot to add, notions of possible worlds are also prominent in parts of physics.
A social phenomenon that needs explanation IMO is why the notions of possible worlds rose to prominence in several domains simultaneously in the mid 1950s -- in Physics (Everett), in Logic (Hintikka, Meredith, Prior, Kanger, Kripke, Beth), in Lingustics (Montague), in Forecasting (Kahn). Was it, I wonder, because the world had at the time two rival political systems and so had an example of alternative possible worlds right in front of everyone?

Modern intellectual thought is still largely limited by government, and other parties with strong taboos. Those on the forefront are finding new things about our minds, evolution, the nature of energy in the universe through such titles (for the general semanticists) as quantum mechanics and neurolinguistic programming, and have been on the threshold of understanding "sanity" ever since the 1950's. I think there are more and more intellectuals every day, but in order to be one you don't have to understand every new theory. It is still very important to see the inter-connectedness of all research, of mind and matter, if we are to find solutions to the problems facing man and our spaceship earth.
